Entry Requirements & Visas
FMM Tourist Card (Critical!)
Must HaveAll visitors need a Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) tourist card. Usually provided free on the plane or at the border—fill it out completely. Immigration stamps it on entry. KEEP IT! You must return it when leaving Mexico or face fines (up to $50 USD). Airline may deny boarding without it. Store it with your passport.
Visa-Free Entry
Up to 180 DaysUS, Canadian, EU, Australian, and many other passport holders can visit Mexico visa-free for tourism up to 180 days. Immigration officer determines your stay length (mark on FMM)—request full 180 days if planning extended stay. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond entry date.
Proof of Onward Travel
Sometimes RequiredWhile not always checked, have proof of return/onward ticket and sufficient funds ready. Some airlines are stricter than immigration. Digital copy on phone is fine. Keep hotel confirmation easily accessible.
Health & Vaccine Requirements
No Required Vaccinations
Good NewsMexico requires no specific vaccinations for entry. However, CDC recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines for most travelers to Mexico. Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, etc.) should be current. Hepatitis B recommended for longer stays or if medical treatment possible. Malaria not a concern in Cabo.
Travel Insurance Strongly Advised
Highly RecommendedNot required but essential. US health insurance often doesn't cover care in Mexico. Get travel insurance with medical coverage (minimum $50,000) and emergency evacuation. Cabo has good private hospitals (BlueNet, Amerimed) but expensive without insurance. Some accept credit cards; others require upfront cash payment.
Prescription Medications
CriticalBring medications in original containers with prescription labels. Carry doctor's note for controlled substances—Mexico is strict. Some US medications are illegal or require special permits. Bring extra supply—don't plan to refill in Mexico. Mexican pharmacies are well-stocked but may have different brands/formulations.
Customs & Financial Requirements
Duty-Free Allowances
Know the RulesAllowed duty-free: Personal items, 10 packs cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200g tobacco, 3 liters wine/beer or liquor, used camera/electronics for personal use. Items over $500 USD total value may be taxed. Keep receipts for expensive items. Some travelers randomly selected for inspection—be honest on declaration form.
Cash Declaration Required
Over $10,000 USDMust declare cash or monetary instruments worth over $10,000 USD (or equivalent) when entering/leaving Mexico. This includes traveler's checks and money orders. Use customs declaration form. Failure to declare can result in confiscation. ATMs widely available in Cabo—Banamex, HSBC, Santander work with most international cards.
Prohibited Items & Medications
Very ImportantProhibited: Illegal drugs, firearms/ammunition (strict gun laws—even one bullet can mean jail time), fresh food/plants/soil, endangered species products. Controlled substances: Many common US medications (especially ADHD meds, sleeping pills, anxiety meds) are illegal or require special import permits. Check with Mexican consulate before packing medications. Serious penalties for violations.
