Airport Arrival & Transfers
Best ways to get from Palma airport to your base
Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)
Must PlanTransfers are easy if you're staying in Palma, but much harder for smaller beach towns and rural villas.
Public transit: Airport buses are good to Palma city center. Service to resort areas can be seasonal or less frequent.
Taxis: Taxi rank is usually available at arrivals, but summer wait times can be long.
Car rental: Often the best option outside Palma. Essential if you're staying in mountain villages or beach areas with limited bus schedules.
Should you prebook? Yes for rental cars and private transfers in peak season (May-September).
My recommendation: If you're not based in Palma, prebook a rental car before arrival.
☁️ Best overall: bus to Palma, rental car for most island itineraries
Transportation & Getting Around
Trains, buses, and travel recommendations
Mallorca Trains & Buses
Same-Day OKPalma has a small train network and extensive bus system. Tickets available at stations/on buses—no advance booking needed.
Palma Metro: Single line connecting city center to university (€1.50). Mainly for locals, limited tourist use.
Scenic train to Sóller: Historic wooden train through mountains to coastal town. Book 1-2 days ahead in summer. €18 one-way, €25 round-trip.
City buses: Extensive network around Palma and to beaches (€1.50-5). Buy tickets on board or get a T10 card (10 rides for €10).
Tip: For exploring beyond Palma, renting a car is more practical. Public transit to remote beaches/towns is limited.
My recommendation: Rent a car. Mallorca's best beaches (Cala Mondragó, Es Trenc, Cala Deià) and mountain villages are hard to reach by bus. The island is made for scenic drives—don't miss it!
