Seoul Airport Arrivals (ICN/GMP)

Recommended

AREX + airport buses are reliable for most Seoul neighborhoods. Prebooking is rarely necessary.

Tip: For very late arrivals or heavy luggage, prebook a private transfer.

Busan

South Korea

Haeundae Blueline Park (Sky Capsule & Beach Train)

Must Book

One of Busan's most booked experiences. Prime afternoon and sunset slots fill quickly.

Booking window: Book 5-10 days ahead in high season and weekends.

Tip: If Sky Capsule times are sold out, Beach Train still gives great coastal views.

Busan Arrival + Intercity Transfer

Recommended

Gimhae Airport transfers are straightforward via light rail + metro. If arriving from Seoul same day, prebook KTX in busy periods.

KTX: Seoul → Busan about 2.5 hours. Popular Fri/Sun departures can sell out.

Tip: Reserve KTX 2-4 days ahead for weekend travel.

☁️ Book KTX at letskorail.com

Jeju

South Korea

Jeju Rental Car

Must Book

The biggest Jeju booking priority is transport. Cars can sell out in peak seasons and holidays.

Booking window: Reserve 2-4 weeks ahead for spring blooms, summer, and long weekends.

Tip: Confirm your pickup location and license requirements before arrival day.

Udo Island Ferry

Recommended

Popular day trip from Seongsan. Usually same-day ticketing, but sailing is weather dependent.

Timing: Morning departures are often smoothest and give more time on Udo.

Tip: Keep one backup activity in case ferries pause due to wind/waves.

Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)

Same-Day OK

One of Jeju's signature spots. Entry is usually same-day at the gate.

Best timing: Early morning for cooler weather and fewer people.

Tip: Pair with nearby east-coast stops instead of crossing the island the same day.

☁️ Check Jeju site info

Jeju Day Tours (No Car Option)

Recommended

If you skip a rental car, prebook east/west route day tours. Good tours can fill up quickly in peak periods.

Booking window: Reserve at least 3-7 days ahead in high season.

Tip: Book one structured tour early, then leave one flexible weather day.

Airport Arrival & Transfers

Arrival strategy differs by city in Korea

Seoul, Busan & Jeju Airports

Recommended

Public transit is excellent in Seoul and Busan, but Jeju often requires taxis or a rental car depending on your plans.

Seoul (ICN/GMP): AREX trains and airport buses are reliable to central districts. Usually no need to prebook.

Busan (PUS): Light rail + metro works well for most neighborhoods. Taxis are easy to find if you arrive late.

Jeju (CJU): Taxis are readily available, but a rental car is often best for beaches and nature spots across the island.

Should you prebook? Prebook private transfer only for very late arrivals, large groups, or if your hotel is in a remote Jeju area.

My recommendation: Transit first in Seoul/Busan; rental car first in Jeju.

☁️ Best overall: trains/metro in cities, rental car or taxi on Jeju

Transportation & Getting Around

Intercity travel and city transit options

Intercity Travel (Between Cities)

For traveling between Seoul, Busan, Jeju, and other cities

Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass)

Must Book

Unlimited KTX (bullet train) and regular train travel for 1-5 consecutive days. Must be purchased before arriving in Korea.

Pricing: 2-day pass ~$100, 3-day ~$130, 5-day ~$180 (saver class). One round-trip Seoul-Busan pays for a 2-day pass.

Routes: Seoul-Busan (2.5 hrs), Seoul-Gyeongju (2 hrs), Seoul-Mokpo (3 hrs). All KTX, ITX, and Mugunghwa trains nationwide.

Tip: Worth it if visiting 2+ cities. Skip if staying in one location.

☁️ Buy KR Pass at letskorail.com

Express & Intercity Buses

Recommended

Extensive bus network connects cities nationwide. Often cheaper than trains with similar travel times.

Express buses: Direct routes between major cities. Seoul-Busan ~₩30,000/$22 (4-5 hours). Comfortable with wifi and restrooms.

Intercity buses: Shorter routes and local destinations. Seoul-Sokcho ~₩15,000/$11 (2.5 hours).

Booking: Reserve online at kobus.co.kr (English available). Book 1-2 days ahead for popular routes.

Tip: Express bus terminals are often separate from train stations. Arrive 10-15 min early.

☁️ Book buses at kobus.co.kr

City Transit (Within Cities)

For getting around Seoul, Busan, and other cities

T-money Card

Same-Day OK

Rechargeable transit card for subway and city buses in all major cities (Seoul, Busan, Daegu, etc.).

Where to buy: Convenience stores (7-Eleven, CU, GS25), subway station kiosks. ₩4,000/$3 deposit + load credit.

Pricing: Subway fare ~₩1,400/$1 per ride. City buses ₩1,200-1,500. Cheaper with transfers (free within 30 min).

Coverage: Works in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju, and most Korean cities. One card for entire trip.

My recommendation: Public transit all the way for Seoul and Busan—metros are pristine, cheap, and easy. Rent a car for Jeju Island only (buses are infrequent and attractions are spread out).
