Essential documentation for your Balearic island escape

Entry Requirements & Visas

Schengen Visa Rules

Must Know

Spain is part of the Schengen Area. US, Canadian, Australian, and many other passport holders can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies across all 27 Schengen countries. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date.

Stay Duration Tracking

Important

The 90/180 rule: you can spend 90 days total in the Schengen zone within any 180-day period. Days are cumulative across all Schengen countries. Use a Schengen calculator online to track your stays if visiting multiple times.

Entry Documentation

Recommended

While rarely requested, Spanish border control may ask for proof of accommodation, return ticket, and sufficient funds (approximately €100/day). Keep digital copies of hotel bookings and return flights easily accessible on your phone.

Health & Vaccine Requirements

No Mandatory Vaccines

Good News

Spain requires no specific vaccinations for entry. Standard travel vaccines (Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, routine vaccines) should be up to date, but they're not mandatory for entry. Check CDC or WHO recommendations based on your origin country.

European Health Insurance Card

For EU Citizens

EU/EEA citizens should bring their EHIC card for access to Spanish public healthcare. Non-EU travelers should have comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies—minimum €30,000 coverage recommended. Spain has excellent healthcare but can be expensive for non-residents.

Prescription Medications

Important

Carry medications in original packaging with prescription labels. Bring a copy of prescriptions using generic drug names—Spanish pharmacies (farmacias) use different brand names. Spanish pharmacies are well-stocked and pharmacists are knowledgeable, but require prescriptions for many medications.

Customs & Financial Requirements

EU Duty-Free Allowances

Know the Limits

From outside the EU: 200 cigarettes (or 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, or 250g tobacco), 1 liter spirits over 22% alcohol OR 2 liters under 22%, 4 liters wine, and 16 liters beer. Goods up to €430 value by air. No limits on personal items for your own use.

Cash Declaration

Required Over €10,000

Must declare cash, checks, or securities worth €10,000 or more when entering/leaving the EU. Use the customs declaration form. Failure to declare can result in confiscation and fines up to 50% of the undeclared amount.

Prohibited Items

Important

Cannot bring: meat, dairy, or eggs from outside the EU; counterfeit goods; endangered species products; certain plants and seeds. Spain has strict agricultural import rules. Fresh food from outside EU is almost always prohibited. Declare anything questionable.
